Low Impact Development

Maximizing Efficacy with Minimal Impact

At GeoInsight, we continually look for ways to implement Low Impact Development (LID) approaches that are more effective, less expensive, and lower in maintenance requirements than traditional approaches. LID has become a common term often associated with beneficial land development activities. The principle of LID is based upon decentralizing the retention of stormwater to generally replicate the surface runoff hydrologic condition prior to development activities. We strive to maximize system effectiveness while minimizing impacts to our environment, safety, and quality of life. GeoInsight meets your LID needs through practical, economical solutions that reduce sediment and nutrient impacts to surface waters.

"You must love the crust of the earth on which you dwell more than the sweet crust of any bread or cake; you must be able to extract nutriment out of a sand heap." -Henry David Thoreau

Treading Lightly

Selecting the most effective LID solution involves a comprehensive understanding of where it is most appropriate to maintain the pre-development surface hydrology and address non-point source pollutants. We are successful with LID design because we have been involved in many different types of construction at multiple types of sites. We apply that experience to our knowledge of stormwater flow characteristics, control techniques, and sustainable systems. Compatible systems used in LID solutions include separating paved surfaces with vegetated areas, attenuation of additional runoff through infiltration galleries, and maintaining important natural vegetated buffers around wetlands and surface waters, thereby decreasing the overall runoff  “footprint.”

A New Paradigm for Stormwater Management

Impervious surfaces, use of fertilizers, and removal of natural vegetation increases runoff and pollutants. Traditional stormwater engineering has focused on flood control for the individual parcel, giving little consideration to the cumulative impact downstream. LID is a tool that helps minimize your impact on impaired surface waters, wildlife habitat, and ground water resources. Many LID approaches require some type of maintenance. However, we can often design systems that do not pose any greater maintenance burden than traditional solutions.

Particular Aspects of GeoInsight’s Low Impact Development Services Include:

  • Natural runoff assessment
  • Hydrologic analysis
  • Watershed management and planning
  • Ecology and habitat assessment
  • TMDL and surface water impairment/quality evaluations
  • Stormwater retrofit analysis, and
  • Stormwater treatment design.

Crown Shore Yacht Club: Low-Impact Design

The Crown Shore Yacht Club is GeoInsight’s latest low-impact development (LID) project. GeoInsight provided a creative design that transformed the existing parking lot configuration (paved parking within the shoreline protection areas, allowing untreated storm water runoff to discharge directly to the lake) into a low-impact design incorporating a rain garden, bio-retention basins, and shoreline buffer restoration.
