  • Insurance | Rollover Release of Fuel Oil from Vehicle Accident Response and Remediation

    A tanker truck carrying approximately 9,500 gallons of several fuels (gasoline, diesel, and No. 2 fuel oil) in separate compartments was involved in a traffic accident. The accident led to the shutdown of surrounding roads after the tanker truck was struck, rolled over and became engulfed in flames. Working in close cooperation with Maine DEP, GeoInsight directed initial remedial activities and excavation until remedial endpoints were achieved.

  • Legal Client | Litigation Support Geotechnical Engineering and Expert Witness

    GeoInsight was retained by a municipal Planning and Development Department to provide expert witness services in a matter regarding a large retaining wall constructed from pieces of recycled concrete bridge decking. The case was brought by the municipality against the property owner alleging, in part, that the wall posed a risk to public safety.

  • Legal Client | Litigation Support for Drainage Engineering Assessment

    We were retained as an expert witness to evaluate the failure of the culvert and embankment located on Cooper Hill Road, which connects Routes 12A and 123, in Alstead, New Hampshire. The embankment failed rapidly due to a large backup of water during the October 2005 prolonged precipitation events that resulted in a catastrophic loss of life and damage to downstream structures.

  • Industrial | Former Mill Complex Fuel-Impacted Soil and Chemical Oxidation of DNAPL

    We completed a source area evaluation and Remedial Action Plan (RAP) in a multi-party litigation case involving a former mill building in Manchester, New Hampshire. Through our initial assessments, we determined that a tetrachloroethylene (PCE) release originated from aboveground storage tanks impacting unsaturated and saturated overburden and bedrock. We were then retained to evaluate and remediate the source and extent of dissolved and dense non aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) and to provide expert testimony and litigation support.

    We currently serve as the project coordinator for this Superfund project on behalf of the Potentially Responsible Parties. The SCFFS provided the basis to move forward with the Source Control (SC) Remedial Design and implementation. GeoInsight currently serves as the Project Coordinator for the Group, interfacing with the regulatory agencies and acting as an intermediary in negotiations.

    We were hired to initiated Phase II Comprehensive Site Assessment and Phase III Remedial Action Planning under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) in 2012 at a 40-acre, abandoned industrial mill complex with a history of a metal/copper works in the 1800s and rubber manufacturing in the 1900s.

  • Municipal Project | Water Quality Engineering

    Following the successful siting of a 550-gallon-per-minute gravel pack well to replace a flood-damaged supply, GeoInsight was requested to design both a transmission line for the replacement supply well and a water treatment facility. Water treatment, including primarily pH control/corrosion protection is needed to treat the groundwater supply prior to distribution to the North Conway public water system.

    Completed hazardous building material survey, preparation of comprehensive characterization reports, and work plans to guide abatement activities over a 5-year period. Compiled the existing asbestos survey and abatement data to prepare a database of testing results to evaluate what media needed testing to plan abatement activities.   This step reduced the number of samples for testing.

    A release of heating oil occurred due to the overfilling of an aboveground storage tank (AST) inside the utility room of the residence.  Our extensive experience with emergency response activities and Connecticut’s spill remediation program were key assets in helping our client manage this significant release.  The work was conducted under the direction of a Connecticut Licensed Environmental Professional (LEP).

    Due to corrosion of an 11-foot diameter riveted steel penstock that extended through the earthen berm portion of the dam, the integrity of the earthen berm was jeopardized. This was evident from sink holes that had developed within the berm near the penstock.

    A gravel pit operator was ordered to stop their operations because their activities were suspected to be lowering water levels in a nearby pond. Concerned residents lived adjacent to the pond and the pond was managed as a local trout pond frequented by local fisherman. GeoInsight was hired to review this concern and to develop/implement a work plan to evaluate the effects of the gravel extraction process on the nearby pond.

    GeoInsight’s experience in providing engineering and environmental solutions on complex redevelopment projects and our longstanding relationship with a private developer of distressed properties made this the right partnership for a redevelopment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This project required state and federal permitting, design and operation of a long-term (24/7 operation for over a year) groundwater dewatering and treatment system, on-site treating lead-impacted soil, excavation and off-site disposal of impacted soil, and public outreach with an active community group.

    GeoInsight performed separate, but similar, projects for three public school systems in Connecticut. In each case, infiltrating water was causing problems that warranted investigation and remedies. We were contacted for these projects based upon our expertise with building and utility construction; methods of controlling accumulated precipitation, runoff, and groundwater; and delivering cost effective solutions. Conditions included water and moisture intrusion within existing utility tunnels, boiler rooms, under slab areas, against exterior walls, and/or in courtyards.

    While the Castle In The Clouds (CITC) facility and setting is among New Hampshire's most beautiful, the operations are costly and must address maintenance of infrastructure and compliance with regulations.     GeoInsight was retained by a large, international multimedia company to conduct a wide range of environmental services to achieve closure of former chromium plating facility. The former facility used two sludge drying beds that were regulated under RCRA. In addition, the historical generation of hazardous waste at the site meant that the facility was regulated under the Connecticut Transfer Act. GeoInsight’s extensive experience with these programs were a key asset in helping this client achieve closure.

  • Insurance Client | Site Investigation and Remediation for PCBs and Petroleum Impacts

    GeoInsight was retained to conduct a wide range of environmental investigation and remediation services in Simsbury, Connecticut. In 1984, the property was redeveloped as high-end office space utilizing the former manufacturing building. As a result of the former manufacturing operations, the property was subject to both the Connecticut Transfer Act and the Federal Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Regulatory closure needed to be met through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP) and USEPA.

    GeoInsight conducted comprehensive compliance audits at two corporate office buildings located in downtown Boston, as well as our client's associated private jet/airplane hanger outside of Boston to evaluate compliance with applicable federal, state and local environmental requirements and assist in the planning for future compliance activities.
