Summer's Here! Top 5 Ways to Stay Out of the EPA's Hot Seat

July 16, 2013

Would your facility be ready for an inspection?

We’re halfway through 2013, and that means you should complete an annual review of your environmental compliance programs.

Summer is a great time for your facility to:

  1. Review and update your Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) Plan, Refrigerant Management Plan, and Hazardous Waste Management Program.
  2. Be sure to add new equipment to your plans and remove equipment that is no longer located at your facility.
  3. Complete your annual hazardous waste management and SPCC training.
  4. Check to see if your SPCC Plan needs to be certified by a Professional Engineer.
  5. Update your emergency contact list. Who would you call first if you had an emergency?

Check up on staff training status and update environmental compliance records

Summer is a great time to train (or re-train) your staff.  Anyone who works with hazardous waste should be trained every year on hazardous waste accumulation, storage, and manifest requirements.  Anyone who works with oil should be trained annually on the SPCC Plan and the actions to take in the event of a spill. This is also a good time to confirm that you are maintaining up-to-date environmental compliance records

  • Have you been tracking your refrigerant losses and hazardous waste manifest records?
  • Do you have a current inventory of your on-site chemical storage?
