Chemical Manufacturing Plant: Environmental Compliance Auditing

GeoInsight was hired by a chemical manufacturing plant to evaluate the facility’s compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. The audit also included a review of the facility’s local environmental permits and program requirements, including flammable material storage.

The facility was a Large Quantity Generator (LQG) of hazardous waste and was required to comply with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).  GeoInsight completed a visual assessment of the site operations and conditions, personnel interviews to confirm their understanding of the operations, and a document review, focusing primarily upon hazardous waste and clean air act reporting and tracking.

The audit findings were summarized in a matrix that included: the name of the major regulatory programs that apply to the facility; the specific regulatory citations; a brief description of the specific regulation; an applicability determination; and comments and/or recommendations for compliance. For confirmed violations, the corrective action plans described each major step necessary to correct the violations and prevent future violations. Using this matrix, the facility was able to quickly identify what needed to be done and they worked with GeoInsight to implement corrective actions. The facility was subsequently inspected by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) with no findings.
